This week's Bulletin reports on preliminary figures which showed the Asia Pacific international air cargo market falling by 4.8% in 2011. In spite of the decline in freight demand, offered freight capacity matched that of the previous year, leading to a 3.4 percentage point decline in the average international freight load factor, to 66.6%. The weakening of air cargo demand reflects cautious management of supply chain inventories in the expectation of relatively weaker growth prospects for the major developed economies.
In the US, the first 2011 full year results of leading transportation companies have been released, including those of J.B. Hunt, Werner, Swift and Norfolk Southern. J.B. Hunt closed out 2011 with record revenues, net earnings and earnings per share in both Q4 and the entire year of 2011. All four of the Company's business segments improved from 2010 in Q4 and full year. Total operating revenue for Q4 was US$1.2 billion, compared with US$1.02 billion for Q4, 2010. Load growth of 17.0% in Intermodal (JBI) helped drive a 24.0% increase in segment revenue. The Dedicated Contract Services (DCS) segment increased operating revenue by 9.0% primarily from new accounts. The Truck (JBT) and Integrated Capacity Solutions (ICS) segments increased revenue 8.0% and 19.0%, respectively, due to higher rates and an increase in fuel surcharges.
Elsewhere, this week, both outsourcing and in-sourcing decisions have been made across the globe, in a variety of industry sectors, by the likes of BP, Emmi, Gondola Group, Bormioli Rocco Group, Daikin, Tate & Lyle, Chevrolet, Intermas Nets and Air Liquide. In the US, in Kentucky, UPS is cutting back operations at a retail supply chain logistics facility, after the biggest customer at the site, Zulily, made a decision to take its inventory management and fulfilment services back in-house.
