This week's Bulletin reports on continued strength in global air freight markets in July 2010, with IATA reporting that international scheduled freight traffic improving 22.7%, relative to July 2009. This year-on-year comparison for July is less than the 26.6% year-on-year cargo traffic increase recorded in June. However, July global cargo demand was 4.0% higher than pre-crisis levels in early 2008.
A slowdown in air freight markets is expected in the second half of the year as the economic cycle moves into a new phase. Extraordinary freight growth rates in late 2009 and early 2010 were supported by businesses re-stocking their inventories. With the re-stocking cycle completed, air freight demand will be driven by consumer spending and business capital expenditure.
Elsewhere this week, Toll has reported revenue for the year ending 30th June 2010 of A$6.9 billion, an increase of 7.0% over the previous period. Revenue across the Group was stronger in the second half of the year despite ongoing challenging conditions in the Australian economy. EBIT was A$434.6 million, compared to A$466.0 million in the previous period. Reported Net profit after tax amounted to A$279.0 million for the year, up 3.3% on 2009. At Toll Global Forwarding (TGF), revenue for the period was A$1.1 billion, up 15.0%. EBIT for the period was A$20.3 million, up 12.0%.
