Smurfit Kappa opens new German logistics centre 28 January 2016

Combining logistics and production at one location

Smurfit Kappa has opened a new 12,000 m2 logistics centre in Delitzsch, north of Leipzig, Germany. The new facility will enable the packaging manufacturer to combine its logistics and production at one location.

The greater Leipzig region is emerging as one of the most important logistics locations in Germany. Smurfit Kappa is taking advantage of the growth of the area to create more space for its growing packaging business and commissioned Goodman to develop a new logistics property adjacent to its existing production centre. In doing so, Smurfit Kappa improves the efficiency of its supply chain in order to provide better service to its customers and reduce its carbon footprint. The facility wil be fully operational in February 2016.

The new facility is part of a growth strategy designed to provide better quality service to customers by optimising the supply chain. The property has an inner hall height of 10 metres, comprises over 11,500 m2 of storage space, 300 m2 for offices and social areas, and a 155 m2 roofed outside storage area. As a result of energy-saving measures, such as the comprehensive use of energy-efficient LED lighting, the facility is also certified to the German Sustainable Building Council’s (DGNB) gold standard.

Leipzig/Halle is a key logistics location offering excellent opportunities across Germany and internationally. It benefits from outstanding motorway and railway networks the Leipzig/Halle airport, which is now the fifth largest air freight hub in Europe.
