UPS helps Team GB go for gold in Vancouver

10 February 2010

UPS is providing all freight and logistics services for Team GB’s kit and equipment

As the eyes of the world turn to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, UPS, the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the British Paralympic Association (BPA) are putting the finishing touches to a logistics project that has spanned several continents and taken months of planning.

As part of its role as the Official Logistics and Express Delivery Supporter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, UPS is providing all freight and logistics services for Team GB’s kit and equipment, including sea and air freight, ground transportation and on-site support at the Olympic Village in Vancouver.

The Team GB logistical journey began in the UK in December 2009 with UPS shipping over four tonnes (8,800 lbs) of items in a 6m (20ft) sea freight container to Vancouver. Air freight operations started in January 2010 with the transportation of four bobsleighs to the training camps in Salt Lake City and Lake Placid. At the same time, skis were air lifted from Germany to Vancouver and opening ceremony parade outfits were flown in from China.

Back in the UK, UPS helped Adidas to distribute the official kit to Team GB athletes. In Canada, UPS will provide key support to Team GB within two Olympic Village sites by storing and delivering in excess of 500 items, as well as assembling items of furniture for the Village.
