Manchester contract switches from Wincanton to Eddie Stobart
Eddie Stobart has been awarded a contract for transport operations at Tesco’s Middleton, Manchester site, taking over in March from the current service provider, Wincanton, as the retailer has chosen to take responsibility for warehousing operations in-house. The retailer plans to move from the 18,600 m2 site in July, transferring to a 49,000 m2 facility on Eddie Stobart's 3MG estate in Widnes, Cheshire.
The 20 year old site at Middleton provides Tesco with no room for expansion, whilst the number of stores the site services has grown considerably.
Wincanton stated that both Tesco and Wincanton wish to make it clear that the decision was not a reflection of the commitment and quality of service of the Wincanton team. The two companies will continue to work together at Snodland, Kent and Daventry, Northants. 700 Wincanton employees are eligible to transfer to Tesco or Stobart under TUPE regulations.
